I miss Firefly.
Yes, it should’ve had more Asian actors, given its premise. Yes, the costumes were too obviously ordered from the Wah Maker catalog. I still miss it. It’s my favorite science fiction TV show. Its sequel, Serenity, is one of my favorite science fiction movies, but it wasn’t the TV show. The cast was a bit large for a two-hour movie; movies and TV shows need to do different things. I admire just about everything Joss Whedon did with the movie, but I don’t love it as much as the TV show.
Now that I’ve had time to think about Serenity…
Spoiler alert!!!!
…I think killing Wash was a mistake. If Serenity was meant to launch a series of films (and it was), it needed beaucoup feelgood for people walking out of the theater. Think of the first (the real first) Star Wars movie: It wouldn’t have done as well if they’d killed Chewbacca or R2D2. Yes, death is realistic, but people blasting things in space isn’t, and for certain kinds of space romps, it’s okay for everyone to survive.
Still, I wish there was another Serenity movie coming out this summer.
Done the Impossible: the Fan’s Tale of Firefly & Serenity is made by people who love the Firefly ‘verse as much as I do, and maybe more. The documentary has interviews with fans who adore the show. As you might expect, that doesn’t add anything to your understanding of Firefly — but it’s sweet. What’s more fun are the bits with Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Alan Tudyk, Joss Whedon, Morena Baccarin, Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass — you know… the people you watched the show to see.
Done the Impossible has a Web site. They link to a couple of rave reviews; SciFi.com and Orson Scott Card also think they did an excellent job of showing fannish love. More importantly, they have trailers. Go and judge for yourself. If you’re tempted to buy, you should. The DVD’s creators did what Browncoats are supposed to do — they deliver on their promise.
I miss Firefly.
