Ellen Datlow’s Comfort Food

We asked a number of folk this question’

“Is it a bowl of your mother’s fish chowder Or a warm doughnut dusted with powdered sugar? Comfort food is as individual as each of us. We here at Sleeping Hedgehog are interested in your story!”

This is Ellen Datlow‘s reply

I’ve got way too many comfort foods. In fact, most food makes me comfortable–is that sick or something? When I eat out it’s the wonderful experience of breaking bread with friends that makes a meal complete. Whether it’s fancy or plain I don’t care. But there are certain cuisines I’ll eat any chance I get — Japanese, Italian, good hamburgers. Anything else is “exotic” (yes, I realize some think that Japanese is one of those) and I have to “be in the mood.”

As far as eating at home by myself. I rarely cook, but when I do I enjoy my omelets with cheese on the weekend; shoulder lamb chops with baked potato and some greens (fresh from the market or store green beans or brussel sprouts); tuna salad on rye.My favorite snack foods? Potato sticks or chips or pretzel rods. Or sometimes I order in sushi. Or go round the block to the British grocery where I buy fresh curried lamb pie, cottage, pie, pork and stilton, or Cornish pasty for dinner.

So there ya go.
Ellen
