Aren’t hedgehogs cute? We think so!
So what is Sleeping Hedgehog all about? Other than showing you ever so cute pictures of hedgehogs that is…
First let us tell you where the name came from. Read that story here.
Sleeping Hedgehog covers myriad aspects of popular culture not covered by our sister site which is Green Man Review as that endeavour will now focus on more traditional music such as Celtic, English trad, American roots, and singer-songwriter will be stressed there now and fantastical fiction of all genres including science fiction, fantasy, and horror which quite frankly has been what readers look for there whereas this blog will look at non-fiction works ranging from the finest culinary adventures to the latest history books, mysteries and detective fiction; comics, both Western and Asian; anime, animated films, and foreign films in general; popular music including Jazz, Blues, and Rock ‘n’ Roll; and music from around the globe as well as classical and contemporary ‘serious’ music.
(Think Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and the Kronos Quartet as to what the latter is.)
There will be reviews of food and drink ranging from the finest ales to the very darkest of chocolates, cool toys such as the wonderful Folkmanis puppets, tarot decks, games, electronics, theatre, art exhibits, and only the Queen of Air and Darkness knows what else as whatever else tickles our fancy will get reviewed here. We’re even open to suggestions as to what we should review so send us your ideas please.
(Better yet, join us as a reviewer. If you have a passion about things you like, can write well, and like having lots of folks know your views, join us.)
We will also publish from time to time (by invitation only as no one here wants to read through a very large slush pile of unsolicited submissions of dubious quality!) short fiction, graphic fiction, and even possibly some poetry, along with our commentaries on the state of the arts, notices of upcoming events, passings, and activities of interest.
(Send your press releases, event notices, news about your Great Must-Be-Reviewed Novel, and so forth. If the material you send us tickles our fancy, we’ll post it here in some form. Or not.)
We strongly welcome comments on every aspect of The Hedgehog — So do feel free to comment on our reviews and commentaries but we expect everyone to play nice as we’re all civilized here. Well, we hope we are!
Guidelines for reviewer auditions should be appearing shortly, along with contact information.
Now excuse me as I’m off to have a cup of the wonderful Bard Coffee that MacAllister Stone is reviewing for us!
Hello, I am writing to you on the subject of contributing reviews.
I am a visionary artist who also writes on mythopoeic themes, focusing these days on the intersection of ritual and theater. (I am one of the artists on the editorial board of COREOPSIS, an online academic journal with a similar focus).
Are you open to (occasional) submissions for reviews of mythic/pagan/mythopoeic theatrical and performance arts events? And does Sleeping Hedgehog require exclusive publication? At this time I have a specific review of a performance done by a Chicago Theater collective called Terra Mysterium, “Finding Eleusis” (a re-imagining of the myth of Demeter and Persephone). This piece has been published online at “The Juggler” and I am negotiating one or two other venues. The Green Man review seems to require both exclusivity and regular contribution; does this apply here as well?
I have in mind some future writing on other performance events along these lines. My writing (including performance-oriented writing) tends to be in depth, exploring layers of significance as well as the event itself. Consequently I am seeking to broaden its exposure to as many like-minded audiences as I reasonably can.
Well, that ought to be enough… let me know one way or another. I enjoyed browsing this site. It displays both wit and insight in abundance, not to mention some wicked style here and there!
Thanks very much for your time!
Paul
